Can You Run an LLM Locally?

Yes, you can run Large Language Models (LLMs) locally but it comes with some trade offs.

Why Run LLMs Locally?

Privacy: Keeping sensitive data on your own hardware instead of sending it to a cloud based LLM provider.

Offline Use: No reliance on an internet connection for access.

Customization: Potential to fine tune the model specifically for your tasks if the LLM allows it.

Cost in the Long Run: Might be cheaper than paying for API usage over time if you make heavy use of the LLM.

Challenges for Actually Doing It

Hardware Power: LLMs are mega demanding. You’ll need a powerful computer with one or multiple high end GPUs. There’s a reason most of these language models run on Nvidia H100s.

Model Size: Smaller LLMs exist but the most capable ones (think GPT-4 turbo) have billions of parameters and require huge amounts of storage space.

Technical Expertise: Setting up the environment involving containers (like Docker) and deploying the LLM isn’t as user friendly as cloud based solutions.

Performance: Even with expensive hardware, local versions might be slower than cloud based LLMs running on specialized machines optimized for inference.

Methods for Local Deployment

Open Source LLMs: Some smaller LLMs (think Bloom, GPT-J) are publicly available along with instructions on how to run them locally.

API for Local Models: Some LLM providers might let you purchase a version of their model to deploy within your own infrastructure but this sometimes comes with a big price tag.

Hybrid Approach: Use a cloud based LLM for prototyping and smaller tasks and switching to a local model for sensitive data or high volume use.

Should You Do It?

It depends if you can. Meta’s Llama 2 does have a local version for example. Others I’m not too sure about.

  • Do you have the hardware and expertise?
  • Is data privacy important for you?
  • Are available open source models suitable or do you require the power of the largest LLMs?
