Completely Wipe an Android Phone: A Step by Step Guide

Backup Your Data (Important)

Before wiping your Android phone, make sure to backup your important data to prevent losing it forever. You can backup your data.

Google Account: Go to Settings –> Accounts –> Google –> Backup and Reset and toggle on Automatic backup. Force a manual backup while you’re on this screen.

Computer: Connect your phone to a computer using a USB cable and transfer files to your computer.

Cloud Storage: Use services like Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive to backup your files.

Factory Reset (Erase All Data)

  • Go to Settings: Find the Settings app on your phone and open it.
  • Scroll down and select System: In the Settings menu, scroll down and select the System option.
  • Choose Reset options: In the System menu, select Reset options.
  • Select Erase all data (factory reset): Choose the Erase all data (factory reset) option.
  • Follow the prompts: Confirm that you want to reset your phone by following the prompts.
  • Enter your Google account password (if prompted): If you have a Google account linked to your phone, you might need to enter your password to confirm the reset.
  • Wait for the reset process to complete: Your phone will restart and begin the reset process. This will take a few minutes.

Required Steps for Extra Security to Make Sure That Any Unscrambled Data is Hard to Recover

1. Encrypt your phone

  • Go to Settings: Find the Settings app on your phone and open it.
  • Scroll down and select Security: In the Settings menu, scroll down and select the Security option.
  • Choose Encrypt phone: Select the Encrypt phone option.
  • Follow the prompts: Confirm that you want to encrypt your phone by following the prompts.

2. Perform a hard reset

  • Press and hold the Power button and Volume down button: Simultaneously press and hold the Power button and Volume down button for 10-15 seconds.
  • Release the buttons when the phone restarts: Your phone will restart and boot up in recovery mode.

3. Wipe the phone’s cache partition

  • Use the phone’s recovery mode: Use the phone’s recovery mode to clear the cache partition.
  • Select Wipe cache partition: Use the Volume down button to navigate to the Wipe cache partition option and select it using the Power button.
  • Confirm the wipe: Confirm that you want to wipe the cache partition by selecting Yes using the Power button.

Final Steps

Remove your SIM card and SD card: Take out your SIM card and SD card to protect your personal information. Physically destroy both of them after you finished wiping them off.

Dispose of your phone responsibly: Properly dispose of your phone or prepare it for sale.
