How to Uninstall AMD Drivers

Method 1: Using AMD Cleanup Utility

This is the officially recommended method for a completely clean driver removal.

1. Download the Utility: Get the AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s website: https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/faqs/GPU-601.html

2. Run in Safe Mode:

  • Restart your computer in Safe Mode for best results. Search for instructions on how to boot into Safe Mode for your Windows version.

3. Execute the Utility:

  • Run the downloaded amdcleanuputility.exe file.
  • Confirm you want to remove AMD drivers and follow the prompts.
  • Restart: Reboot your computer when finished.

Method 2: Device Manager

1. Open Device Manager:

  • Right click the Start Menu and select “Device Manager” or search for it.

2. Expand Display Adapters: Find your AMD graphics card.

3. Right Click Uninstall:

  • Right click on the AMD graphics card.
  • Choose “Uninstall device”.
  • Check the Box: Make sure the box to “Delete the driver software for this device” is checked.
  • Click “Uninstall”.

Method 3: Programs and Features (Other Drivers)

1. Open Apps and Features: Search for “Apps and features” in the Start menu.

2. Uninstall AMD Software: Find any AMD related software packages for example AMD Radeon Software, AMD Settings.

3. Follow Uninstaller: Click “Uninstall” for each and follow their prompts.

Important Things

Restart: Reboot your computer after driver uninstallation for all the changes to take effect.

DDU (Advanced): Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a third party tool for more extensive cleaning but use it with caution and only if you’re comfortable with advanced procedures and installing 3rd party software.

Fresh Installation: After uninstalling, download the latest drivers from the official AMD website: https://www.amd.com/en/support

When to Uninstall AMD Drivers

Troubleshooting: If you face graphics glitches, errors or performance issues reinstalling the driver will sometimes help.

Upgrade Conflicts: When updating to a major new driver version, a clean slate will prevent conflicts.

Clean Start: If you want to completely remove AMD drivers and reinstall with a fresh PC for any reason.
